This is one of the best value hawker bowls for anyone counting. 150g of noodles is about 180 calories, five prawns about 60, and the broth, even though it tastes rich, is around 40 calories a bowl because the stall skims most of the fat off. Add kangkong and bean sprouts at 10 and some fried shallots at 15. That is 294 for a full bowl that keeps you full until dinner.
The dry version is a different dish for calorie purposes. Same noodles, same prawns, but tossed in chilli paste, lard, ketchup and soy. That dressing is about 150 to 170 calories, which takes the bowl to 461. The small bowl of broth on the side is still nearly free. So dry prawn mee costs you about 55 percent more than soup for the same amount of food.
Watch the add ons. Pork ribs are the usual upgrade and two ribs add around 150 calories. The S$8 jumbo prawn version is fine, because prawns are lean, and two big prawns are only about 60 calories more. Pig tail and intestines also stay under 100. The rule is simple. Add seafood, not pork fat.
