How Many Calories in Fish and Chips?

A full plate is about 800 calories. The fish is innocent, the batter and fries are the problem.

800kcal / 1 plate
A plate of fish and chips runs around 800 calories. The fish fillet underneath is lean white fish, maybe 150 calories of actual fish. The rest is the thick deep-fried batter coating it, the big pile of fries, and the tartar sauce on the side. That adds up to roughly 35g protein, 70g carbs and 42g fat.

The real talk

Here is the cruel joke with fish and chips. The fish itself is one of the leanest, highest-protein things you can eat. Then they wrap it in a thick beer batter and drop the whole thing in the deep fryer, so that innocent fillet comes out wearing a heavy oil-soaked jacket.

Then it sits next to a mountain of fries (also deep-fried) and a dollop of tartar, which is basically mayo. So the one healthy ingredient on the plate ends up buried in two layers of deep-fry. A takeaway portion can hit 850 plus easy. Tasty as hell, but no, it is not the light seafood option lah.

Common questions

How many calories in fish and chips?
A standard plate is around 800 calories. The fish itself is only about 160, the rest is the deep-fried batter, the fries and the tartar sauce. Large takeaway portions can hit 1000.
Is fish and chips healthy?
The fish is lean and high in protein, but the batter and fries are both deep-fried, so the plate as a whole is heavy in fat and carbs. It is a treat meal, not a light seafood option.
How do I make fish and chips lighter?
Peel off some of the batter, swap fries for mushy peas or salad, and go easy on the tartar. That can bring it down towards 450 to 500.
