Nobody orders tangsuyuk alone, and that is the problem. A small plate is 1,800 calories, a large one about 2,600, and it arrives next to two bowls of jajangmyeon at 797 each. Split a small plate three ways and each person adds 590 calories to an 800 calorie noodle bowl. That is a 1,400 calorie lunch on a Tuesday.
The pork itself is lean. 130g of loin strips would be about 180 calories before battering. The potato starch batter soaks up oil during the double fry and turns that into 420, and then 70g of the sweet and sour sauce adds another 150 with roughly 25g of sugar. The pineapple, cucumber and onion in the sauce are the only things you can eat freely.
Whether you dip or pour makes a small difference, about 40 calories. Dipping (찍먹) means you use less sauce and the batter stays crisp, so you eat slower. Pouring (부먹) soaks the batter and most people eat the whole puddle. At 18,000 to 25,000 won for a small plate, either way it is an expensive way to eat 600 calories of batter.
