540kcal / 1 plate
A standard zi-char plate of sweet and sour chicken comes in around 540 calories, with 26g protein, 52g carbs and 26g fat. The chicken itself is fine, but it gets battered and deep fried first, then drowned in a sauce that is basically sugar, ketchup and vinegar. That combo of fried batter plus sweet sauce is what pushes the carbs and fat up together.

The real talk

Sweet and sour chicken is one of those zi char plates everyone orders without thinking. Crispy battered chicken, that bright red glossy sauce, bits of pineapple and capsicum for show. Tastes great with rice, no argument. But here is the thing bro, the chicken is deep fried in batter before it even touches the sauce, so you are paying for the oil and the flour twice. Then the sauce itself is loaded with sugar to get that sweet tang. At around 540 calories for a plate, it is not a disaster, but it is also not the lean protein dish people pretend it is.

The sauce is the swing factor. Some shops make it light and tangy, some make it candy-sweet and thick enough to coat a spoon. The sweeter and glossier it looks, the more sugar is in there, and that can add 80 to 120 calories on its own. Portion matters too. A small plate shared between people is one thing, but a full plate to yourself with a mountain of rice and you are easily past 900 calories for that one corner of the table. If you want the flavour without the full hit, ask for the sauce on the side and dip instead of drowning.

Common questions

How many calories in sweet and sour chicken?
A standard zi char plate is roughly 540 calories, with 26g protein, 52g carbs and 26g fat. Heavier sauce and thicker batter can push it past 600.
Why is sweet and sour chicken so high in carbs?
Two reasons. The chicken is coated in flour batter before deep frying, and the sauce is built on sugar and ketchup. Those two together are where most of the 52g of carbs come from, not the chicken.
Is sweet and sour chicken a good protein choice?
It gives you about 26g of protein per plate, which is decent, but it comes packaged with 26g of fat and a lot of sugar. If protein is the goal, a steamed or plain stir-fried chicken dish gets you more protein for fewer calories.
