Chicken delivery is the biggest hidden calorie source in Korea, because the box is designed for sharing and rarely is. A whole chicken is 10 to 12 pieces at 230 to 270 calories each. Two people splitting a box with a large beer each are at about 1,150 calories per person, at 10pm, after dinner.
The batter is thin, which is why Korean fried chicken feels lighter than American, but double frying pushes oil into every crack. A plain fried piece is about 230 calories; the yangnyeom glaze adds around 40 per piece and 15g of sugar per half chicken. Honey, soy garlic and cheese powder versions land in the same range, 950 to 1,050 per half.
A box costs 20,000 to 24,000 won now, which is another reason to finish it. The pickled radish (치킨무) on the side is about 20 calories for the whole tub and the only thing on the table that will not hurt. A 500ml draft beer is 210 calories; the second one is where a normal dinner becomes a 1,400 calorie night.
