The real talk

Kuih cara berlauk is the rare savoury kuih, little coconut batter cakes from a mould topped with seasoned minced chicken, beef or prawn. Two pieces are around 150 calories, from the santan batter and the oily savoury topping. Because it has meat, it actually carries a bit of protein, which most kuih do not.

There is a sweet version too, kuih cara manis, which swaps the meat for sugar and pandan at around 70 a piece. The savoury one is a more interesting choice if you want something that is not just sugar, but it is still small treat food, eaten two or three at a time.
