Popiah is the smart pick on the kuih table and not many people clock it. It is a soft wrap filled with sengkuang (turnip), vegetables, egg and a bit of taukua, not deep fried at all. So a roll is around 185 calories, mostly real ingredients. Compare that to a fried curry puff or pisang goreng and popiah wins on quality easily.
The one thing that nudges it up is the sweet sauce and sometimes a sprinkle of fried shallots or pork floss. None of it is a disaster, but if you want the lightest version, go easy on the sweet sauce.
