Es teler is fruit and ice, which sounds light, but look at which fruit. Avocado, 80g of it, is 130 calories on its own. Young coconut flesh is about 35 for 60g, jackfruit is 40 for a few pieces, kolang-kaling is 20. That is 225 calories of fruit before the wet ingredients, and the avocado is more than half of it. Es buah, which uses melon, papaya and jelly, is about 250 a bowl for the same size.
Then the pour. A bowl gets about 60ml of santan at 70 calories and 40g of condensed milk at 130, sometimes with sugar syrup too. That 200 calories of liquid is what makes es teler es teler, and it is why the bowl is 425 with 20g of fat. The 'teler' means drunk, and the name is about the richness, not the alcohol.
It is Rp 15,000 to 25,000 at a warung and Rp 30,000 plus at the mall chains, and it comes after a full meal in the same sitting. Nasi padang at 690 plus es teler at 425 is 1,100 for lunch. Es teler is not a drink to have with food. It is dessert with a straw.
Es campur and es doger are cousins with the same problem: the fruit and jelly are cheap in calories, the condensed milk and syrup are not. Es doger, with tape and its pink syrup, is about 350. Es campur is 300 to 350. Es teler is the heaviest of the family because of the avocado and the santan.
