The real talk

Dodol is that sticky, dark, chewy sweet cooked down for hours from glutinous rice flour, coconut milk and gula melaka until it is almost solid. Because all the water is cooked out, it is one of the most calorie dense kuih per gram, around 350 calories per 100g. The pieces are small though, so one is around 100 calories.

The durian version is richer, a bit higher from the durian fat. Dodol is a proper concentrated sweet, so a small piece goes a long way. The trap is it keeps well and sits around the house during festive season, so you nibble piece after piece.

Common questions

How many calories in dodol?
About 100 calories for a small piece, but it is very dense at around 350 calories per 100g because it is cooked down until almost all the water is gone.
Why is dodol so calorie dense?
It is sugar and coconut milk slow cooked with glutinous rice flour to near dehydration, so the calories are concentrated into a small, heavy piece.
Is durian dodol higher in calories?
Slightly, around 110 versus 100 for plain, because the durian adds extra fat. Both are dense, so small pieces are the way to go.
