How Many Calories in Yuenyeung (Coffee Milk Tea)?

Also known as 鴛鴦, Yuanyang, Yin Yeung, Coffee with Tea, Hong Kong Coffee Milk Tea.

Yuenyeung is Hong Kong milk tea mixed with coffee, roughly 7 parts tea to 3 parts coffee, with evaporated milk and sugar. It is a cha chaan teng standard, hot or iced, for about HK$20.

130kcal / 1 cup (hot, 240ml)
A hot cup of yuenyeung (240ml) is about 130 calories. The iced version (300ml) is around 160 calories at regular sweetness or 120 less sweet. It runs about 20 calories higher than plain milk tea because the coffee bitterness gets balanced with a bit more sugar.

The real talk

People assume yuenyeung and milk tea are the same calorie-wise. They are close but not identical. CFS data puts hot milk tea at 110 and hot yuenyeung at 130, with the difference being sugar: 7g in milk tea versus 12g in yuenyeung. Cha chaan tengs add more because coffee makes the drink more bitter and customers complain if it is not sweet enough.

The iced version is where it climbs. At 160 calories and 24g of sugar per 300ml glass, an iced yuenyeung is more than a can of Coke. Two of those a day, which is not unusual for anyone working long hours in Kwun Tong or Tsim Sha Tsui, is 320 calories and nearly 50g of sugar before you count any food.

The fat side is the same as milk tea: about 5g per cup, all from the 50ml or so of evaporated milk. That is not much on its own. The reason to care about this drink is really the sugar, which is why the less sweet order (少甜) knocks 40 calories off the iced version and brings it to 120, the same as a hot milk tea.

Common questions

How many calories in an iced yuenyeung?
About 160 calories for a 300ml glass at regular sweetness, or 120 calories if you order it less sweet, based on Centre for Food Safety figures.
Is yuenyeung higher in calories than milk tea?
Yes, by about 20 to 30 calories. Hot yuenyeung is 130 versus 110 for milk tea, mostly because more sugar is added to balance the coffee.
How much caffeine is in yuenyeung?
Roughly 100 to 150mg per cup, since it combines strong tea and coffee. That is similar to a regular cup of brewed coffee.
