The rice is two thirds of the plate. CoCo Ichi's standard 300g of rice is 468 calories before a drop of sauce lands on it, and the pork curry sauce itself is only about 230. That is the opposite of what most people assume. The curry looks rich, but it is a thin layer of roux, flour and a little pork over a very large pile of carbohydrate. At 127g of carbs, one plate is more carbs than 3 bowls of ramen noodles.
Toppings are how a 701 calorie plate becomes a 1,100 one. Rosu katsu curry is 1,116 by CoCo Ichi's own table, fried chicken curry is 1,026, and the cheese topping adds about 150. The base curry costs about 600 yen, and each topping is 200 to 300 yen, so the bill and the calories climb together. A 'katsu, cheese, extra sauce' order is 1,300 calories for about 1,200 yen.
The good news is that CoCo Ichi is the easiest chain in Japan to order light at. Rice comes in 100g steps. Drop from 300g to 200g and the plate is about 545 calories. Choose the 150g option and it is 467. Add the spinach or vegetable topping instead of katsu and you have a 550 calorie plate with something green on it, which is rare for a curry shop.
