This is the hawker bowl dietitians keep pointing people to, and the number backs it up. 150g of bee hoon is about 165 calories, 80g of sliced batang fish about 90, the clear broth 50, vegetables and tomato 15, and the fried shallots and a drizzle of oil around 25. That is 349 for a full bowl with 25g of protein. Nothing else at the hawker centre gives you that ratio for S$5.
The same stall sells a bowl that is more than double. Fried fish bee hoon with milk is the sliced fish battered and deep fried, then the broth whitened with evaporated milk. That bowl is about 730 calories. The fried fish coating and oil add about 250, the milk another 100, and the stalls usually put in more fish because the fried version is the premium order. Same counter, same bee hoon, 380 calories apart.
The plain version is not bland if you use the chilli padi and soy dip properly. That dip is about 15 calories. A spoon of the fried shallot oil from the top of the pot is 40. Ask the stall to go light on the shallot oil and you keep the taste at a lower price.
