Kaya toast is a kopitiam classic. Charcoal-toasted white bread, a generous spread of kaya (that's coconut and pandan jam, very sweet, very Malaysian), and a thick slab of cold butter sandwiched in the middle. At 370 calories for two slices, it's not a light breakfast, but it's also not a disaster on its own. The issue is that 130 of those calories come purely from that butter slab, and the kaya adds another 75 kcal mostly from sugar. The bread is almost the innocent party here.
What actually changes the number: skip the butter and you drop to 235 kcal, a full 135 kcal gone just like that. Go the Ya Kun chain route with 4 thin butter layers instead of one thick kopitiam slab, and you're looking at around 460 kcal for what is essentially the same dish. The kaya portion matters too. A light spread versus a generous slather can swing 20 to 30 kcal easily. And remember, most people pair this with teh tarik or kopi susu, which adds another 80 to 150 kcal on top. The full breakfast set with soft-boiled eggs is probably 500 to 550 kcal total once you count everything.
