Chapati is basically a simple wholemeal flatbread, flour and water, cooked dry on a tawa (flat griddle) with minimal oil. Unlike roti canai which gets folded with a good amount of ghee and flipped till flaky, chapati is more straightforward and lighter. At 200 calories a piece with 7g protein and only 4g fat, it's genuinely one of the better bread choices at the mamak. Most of those calories come from the wholemeal atta dough itself (155 cal), and the rest from the light oil brushed on. To be honest, these numbers are a ballpark estimate because solid lab data for mamak-style chapati is thin. Different stalls use different amounts of oil, so treat 200 as a reasonable middle ground.
The thing that changes the maths fast is what you eat it with. Plain chapati with no oil is closer to 165 calories, which is actually quite decent. Add a serving of dhal (about 60g alongside) and you're at 260 calories total. Order it with meat curry and you're looking at around 300 calories. If you're cutting, skip the roti canai and order chapati with dhal instead. You save maybe 200-300 calories compared to a full roti canai order, and you still walk out full. Two pieces of chapati plus dhal is a solid mamak meal for under 600 calories lah.
