The prawns are not the issue. Five large prawns at 90g of meat is about 90 calories with 18g of protein. Everything they are covered in is. The cereal is Nestum, a sweetened wheat and oat cereal, fried in butter with sugar and sometimes milk powder until it crisps. A share of that cereal is about 100 calories, the butter about 85, and the batter on the prawns plus the curry leaf oil and egg yolk another 50. That is 330 for a portion that fits on a saucer.
The full plate is what arrives at the table. A S$18 to S$25 cze char plate of cereal prawns is 8 to 10 prawns and a generous pile of cereal, about 600 calories. Two people sharing it is 300 each, which is fine. One person eating most of it because it is in front of them, with a bowl of rice at 325, is close to 900 for one dish of a five dish dinner.
The cereal is the thing to watch, and it is the thing everyone fights over. Once the prawns are gone, the crunchy sweet cereal at the bottom of the plate is about 40 calories a spoonful. Three spoons of leftover cereal is 120, the same as a prawn and a half. It is the best part of the dish. It is also butter and sugar in a crunchy shape.
